About

Obvious is a collective of artists and researchers who push the limits of generative AI for creative and artistic purposes. They sign their works with an algorithm, raising the question of the machine’s role in their creations. Their Edmond de Bellamy painting made IA Art history by reaching the unprecedented sum of 432,000 USD at a Christie’s auction in 2018.

Obvious is represented by the Danysz Gallery (Paris, Shanghai, London).

For their 7.1 series, the members of the collective worked́ with a historian to feed their algorithms with a synthesis of the many ancient texts describing the Seven Wonders of the World. What did the Colossus of Rhodes look like? The lighthouse of Alexandria? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Fed with this information, AI revealed what it understood from it.

Armed with its knowledge and enhanced ability to synthesize, is AI capable of revealing information that might have escaped us? If so, could this capacity to elucidate provide answers to questions that mankind has been asking for centuries?

Artwork presented at « AI, My Sparring Partner", an exhibition commissioned by Havas, Paris, 2024.
