About

Marine Bléhaut deals with the question of remembering. Her materials are generally public domain film archives. They question our collective memory: what nourishes it and contributes in that way to building our culture? Will what remains of us be true to who we were?

Video created with images generated with Midjourney

Marine Bléhaut constructs memories from scratch by editing a film made of photographs of a past life, each created with the help of AI. A muffled soundtrack made up of various noises (voices, vinyl cracking) obtained by AI has also been added.

The artist uses the codes of collective memory to create the idea of individual memories, resonating differently according to the viewer. By focusing on amateurishly framed photos, she draws attention to details unintentionally highlighted by the presumed photographer - actually randomly highlighted by AI – thus exploring the aura of family photographs from the 1970s and 1980s. "What's hidden in the corners of these images?" she asks, probing what AI, like a mirror, might reveal about us and our past.

This work questions what AI understands about our collective and intimate history from all the data it analyzes, and its ability to deliver it and generate images that can reproduce a past experience.

Artwork presented at « AI, My Sparring Partner", an exhibition commissioned by Havas, Paris, 2024.
