About
Both a visual artist and photographer, Agnès Propeck creates carefully staged compositions based on associations of ideas and words, often producing strange and wondrous effects. Her work maintains a subtle connection with childhood: she draws on its codes – precision, construction, imagination and storytelling – to renew her perspective and project herself elsewhere. By diverting objects from their usual purpose and placing them in familiar contexts, the artist creates visual poems open to countless interpretations.
Agnès Propeck is represented by Agence Vu.

“One day I stopped understanding why the thing I saw in front of me was called a chair and not something else. And why it was on ‘chair’ that one was supposed to sit rather than on another word.
Once that environment became more understandable, it was the gesture itself that began to seem suspicious to me. Now that I have all this vocabulary, I try to understand situations, events and expressions.
Photography allows me to speak about reality while simultaneously leaving it behind.”
